In 1930 the dashing Henry “Gino” Watkins, aged 24yrs, led a group of fourteen intrepid and mostly inexperienced young men to pioneer the first commercial air route between Europe and America.

The possibilities of an Arctic Air Route between Europe and America had been discussed for years with many advantages, such as it was the shortest distance between England and Canada and weather predictions in most parts of the Arctic were more stable and easier to forecast than in England.

Sailing from London in July 1930 in the Norwegian ship “Quest”, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s boat, on which he died, the expedition reached Angmagssalik in East Greenland, where a base camp was established.
